Video Game News & Discussion 2009-2017

Does the new 3DS have a higher resolution screen? The current one is too low res for me.

In depressing news, FF13 on PC isn’t going as well as one would have liked:

Nope, same specs.

That’s kinda disappointing. I heard it had a faster CPU and that there will/might be games in the future that only work on the new DS so I was hoping that it was better in all ways but instead it’s similar to the N64 w/RAM expander.

Maybe the old 3DS XL will price drop and I’ll pick it up that way.

Smash Bros BARELY made it under the specs of the old 3DS. Right now, it disable system features while you’re playing. And it does a soft reboot of the home screen when you quit the game as well.

It’ll be much more powerful but no HD screen. I was truly hoping for that to be the next step up (3DS/XL HD). Nintendo missed an opportunity there because that would’ve made it the ultimate 3DS. Of course the price would likely skyrocket.

So all the hype about the new SSB got me in the frame of mind to fire up Melee or Brawl. My GameCube and Wii are legacy, so I had to use 'em on the PC.

Melee in 16:9, 2560*1440 looks pretty good. Way better than a 13 year old game ought to. The advantage of Nintendo’s graphical style.

SSB seems to be in a league of its own starting with Melee in terms of graphics. Gamecube itself was pretty good at its time, but SSBM was basically the graphics demo (and the Pikmin series). Same with Brawl on the Wii (four Ice Climbers would appear to really push the system to its limit).

…Actually, outside of Brawl, I’m not sure any game made for it really pushed the Wii’s limits for a reason other than it was a cross platform game.

On a retro kick, and because I heard it was decent port, I bought Valkyria Chronicles on Steam. So far, it has been as good of a port as the reviews said. My only complaint is that the FOV needs to be adjusted.

I really don’t remember this English dub though.

Also, Metroid Prime is still as fun as I remember, but the controls still really suck. When I played it years ago, I didn’t really know how to use a controller so the awkward single-stick FPS design wasn’t so bad-it made controlling the game easier for a noob lol-but now that I’ve played more games with a controller I keep trying to use the second stick. Not being able to sidestep outside of combat or free look while moving feels so quaint to me now.

I thought the same thing when I started playing the port, but I went back and took a look at some cutscenes from the PS3 and they seem to be the same. All of the audio sounds a little different than the original, but it’s the same dub it seems.

As far as ports go, it’s pretty good. Most ports try to lock your resolution and frame rate at whatever they were originally released in (Dark Souls). Others seem to ignore that you’re on a PC and continue to show all your button prompts as controller buttons (Castle Crashers). And even others don’t even give you an “exit game” option on the title menu, forcing you to alt+F4 out or close the game in the task manager (Resident Evil 4). But Valkyria Chronicles seems to do all this right. Pretty good for a port that nobody saw coming.

This seems to be the case with the 3DS release of SSB as well. The 3DS is definitely pushed to its limits, even using resources normally reserved for the home screen, seeing as it seems to do a soft reset of the system when exiting the game.

I somehow switch away from SSB without that soft reset, and found my eShop broken as a result. Had to do a full reboot. That reset is REALLY annoying. But then, the update that gave us themes, make launching games slower for me.

Also, I think I heard that the 3DS is the reason Ice Climbers is not in the new version. I noticed that the Pikmin have a really choppy frame rate. I need to see if Luma does as well. If so, then the AI for those type of characters might need too much CPU than the 3DS can handle, and they couldn’t get away with whatever tricks they used for Pikmin (and maybe Luma) on Ice Climbers.

Yeah, the theme update definitely slowed things down a bit. This is all stuff that would likely not happen on the New 3DS, but those won’t be in North America until next year (hopefully no later than that). I wonder if nintendo realizes that the old 3DS can barely handle the stuff they’re trying to do with it.

It’s like thinking that your first generation i7 CPU is just as good as the current generation because it’s an i7.

That’s depressing to hear as it would mean that Nintendo has a case of “consolitis” within its console ecosystem. The Ice Climbers were (was?) some of my best characters in Melee & Brawl. The games don’t have cross-platform play IIRC so I’m not sure why they have to be made so similar. I’m hoping that this one will still hit it off in the fandom as, in my experience, Brawl didn’t.

There’s no cross play, but they wanted the the roaster to be the same on both versions. (Also, the 3DS can be a controller on the Wii U version)

I wish they hadn’t pushed for standardization between the two versions as they’re not the same game but oh well. I suppose I’ve been used to consolitis symptoms like this since Borderlands 1 didn’t live up to the gearbox hype due to technical limits of the 360. Since they’re doing dlc characters, maybe they’ll change their minds and put all the chars from Melee in, even if they can’t be added to the 3ds version. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

Dude, I know I’m a super nerd when this gives me chills to see Halo 2 looking this good from its roots of 10 years ago. Not many games do that for me anymore. Sentimental value with this one I presume… :no_mouth:

Halo: The Master Chief Collection - Launch Trailer

I remember when Halo 2 launched, and all the hype of “dual wielding”. Man, that makes me feel kinda old.

This does look pretty good. Those cutscenes are close to rivaling the CG of the first Final Fantasy movie. Far better than the original cutscenes. With all the talk of the Xbone’s lack of power I’m a bit concerned about what the gameplay will look like but it has to be a mind-blowing upgrade over what we had on the Xbox.

The trailer mentions Halo’s legacy to online gaming, which is a bit tragic since I’m hearing that the multiplayer in this release is having some major issues.
