Video Game News & Discussion 2009-2017

Sadly, if the 3DS can’t handle a character for some reason, it won’t appear in the Wii U version.

My niece is going to kick my ass on the planned game night my family has. No date has been set in stone, but I’m pushing for Black Friday.

Yesterday they gave us 2 hours+ of live twitch stream of Pillars of Eternity!

With commentary offered by project director Josh Sawyer himself.

Funny, but a shame for “Assassin’s Creed” fans.

One of the hottest video games has some hilarious glitches

“Madoka Magica” Comes to “Monster Hunter Frontier G”

I like the two sidekicks at the end.

Original Dead or Alive final boss, Raidou, returns for Dead or Alive 5: Last Round as a playable character

I got to play some SSB (they needed a subtitle for this one) on Wii U, my first ever Wii U experience outside of a store demo stand, and it was pretty fun. Especially once the bad ideas from Brawl (eg: Final Smash) are disabled.

Even though the Wii U tablet screen is alarmingly low-res, the game was very playable on it and it did solve the “we don’t have enough viewing area for everyone playing” problem. The real-time streaming video was pretty cool IMO.

On resolution, I wonder if SSB really is 1080p60 as, compared to 1080p60 and 1440p60 emulated Brawl and Melee, it didn’t really look it. Part of that might be that I had to play it on a TN screen instead of the vastly-superior IPS monitor that I’m used to (so bad off-angle viewing, bad contrast) but I don’t believe that tells the whole story.

I remember Majora’s Mask being really difficult for me. I didn’t know what I was doing or what I was supposed to do half the time. Eventually though, thankfully, I did start moving along and got up to the Stone Tower Temple and did some work in there before never looking at it again. Curious to know what boss is getting altered.

The only super difficult parts for me when I first played it on the N64 was in the snow temple. I had a hard time getting across the ravines with the Goron roll. I was able to accomplish that part without any difficulty a little while later though. The most annoying part is just getting things done before time runs out. But, the song of double time helps a whole lot.

Yeah I remember that dungeon being quite the puzzle. It was quite awesome in the inside.
I remember also being nervous about saving properly at first.

Assassin’s Creed Unity DLC Goes Free to Apologize for Technical Problems

Playing Valkyria Chronicles has reminded of what might be, behind NPC escort missions, the most annoying gameplay construct: fighting an indestructible enemy who can one-hit KO all of your units. Bad game design is bad.

This reminds me of My-Otome, where the single female super soldier destroys whole armies without so much as a scratch. I’m feeling the pain of the antagonist in that series whose nation had an army but no Otome of its own lol.

It’s terrible game design, imo. Inu-Yasha, curse of the Sacred Mask uses this trick too, by having you fight Naruko in the middle, but the fight is unwinable because they still need you to play the 2nd half of the game.

Best Black Friday 2014 Gaming Deals

Console Deals

Wii U: While the $300 32GB bundled with Super Mario 3D World isn’t bad, report indicate that you’ll be able to buy the unit tax free on Friday for just under $270.

However, if you’re willing to spend a little more in exchange for a free game, this Best Buy bundle includes the regular pack-ins (Super Mario 3D World and Nintendo Land) as well as Super Smash Bros. and Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze for $360 – about $50 in savings.

Xbox One: Microsoft already discounted their system to $350 for the holidays, but you can knock off a few more dollars with the following deals:

The Microsoft Store is selling the Xbox One for $330, plus a free game (note that these deals go in and out of stock quickly on their online store, so you may have to check back later if it’s not currently available).

Target is selling the Assassin’s Creed Unity bundle for $330 plus you get a $50 gift card.

And don’t forget that the Microsoft store is also giving $100 credit for your used PS3/Xbox 360. This may or may not work with the specific holiday bundles, but you should still be able to get a $250 Xbox One bundle, at the least.

PlayStation 4: We haven’t found any crazy deep discounts, but most retailers have a $400 bundle available that includes the essential titles Grand Theft Auto V and The Last of Us Remastered.

Gaming Deals

Blizzard is having a sale on all of their games on the Battle.net store. These deals are available now through December 2 at midnight PST.

Steam Changes Its Game Trading Policy

Valve has changed Steam’s policy to disallow users from immediately trading games purchased as gifts.

The company made the announcement with brief post to the Steam Trading Cards Group page. “We’ve made this change to make trading gifts a better experience for those receiving the gifts,” Valve said. “We’re hoping this lowers the number of people who trade for a game only to have the game revoked later due to issues with the purchaser’s payment method.”

Games purchased as gifts can still be gifted at any time, of course, but if you’re just keeping the item in your inventory you won’t be able to trade it for 30 days after purchase. Theoretically, this should help prevent cases where users buy games from third parties only to have those keys revoked, as was the case for some users who bought Sniper Elite III back in June.

Square Enix augments store with Cyber Monday sales

You may have survived Black Friday, but don’t get cocky - America loves to shop, and a slew of online deals is about to invade the interwebs thanks to Cyber Monday. One such deal comes to us courtesy of Square Enix, which is cutting prices of items sold via its online store by 60 percent.

There are more than 225 games, DLC packs and physical collectibles on sale, including games like Thief, Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn, Drakengard 3, Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Tomb Raider. The deals end Monday evening at 11:59 Pacific.

Valkyria Chronicles features numerous cutscenes that are pre-rendered, despite being made with the same engine that powers the normal gameplay. For some reason, these cutscenes are only in 720, making them 1/4th the resolution that I’m playing the rest of the game at. I wonder why the developers didn’t make the cutscenes in 1080. That would have made the cutscenes look better than the game on PS3 but that’s something of a JRPG tradition lol.

GOG is trying to persuade me to buy Agarest: Generations of War Collectors Edition. That game brings out a flaw in digital game distribution as that game’s claim to fame was the bundled custom mousepad.

Sony Terminating FIFA Sponsorship Deal

Sony will not renew its sponsorship contract with worldwide soccer governing body FIFA, as the technology behemoth seeks to instead spend its money on a number of reforms.

Sony was a marquee FIFA sponsor, backing more than 40 tournaments, including multiple World Cups. The Telegraph reports that Sony had been a FIFA sponsor since 2006, in a contract worth £222 million ($348.7 million).

Sony’s sponsorship deal with FIFA ends December 31. A report from Nikkei said Sony considered renewing its deal with FIFA, but ultimately decided not to over concerns that sponsorship costs might rise. Sony’s decision to walk away from FIFA comes as the company is seeking to complete “structural reforms” during this fiscal year, Nikkei said.

Just last week, Sony laid out part of this vision, saying that it will cut back on its TV and mobile phone business units and instead place more focus on PlayStation.

Sony’s decision to terminate its FIFA sponsorship contract also comes as the 2022 World Cup in Qatar has been faced with bribery allegations. Longstanding FIFA sponsor Adidas said it was concerned about these claims, while another major backer, Coca-Cola, said anything that detracts from the mission and ideals of the World Cup is a “concern” for the company.

Hopefully those reforms will include cybersecurity.
