After talking to the Administration at Anime Network, they believe you have an unsupported box.

Since you’ve been getting so many different responses, it’s time to call DirecTV Technical Support and ask to speak to a supervisor. Tell them how long this problem has been going on and the problem.

You’re probably having the same trouble on other OnDemand channels as well.

I’m afraid there isn’t anything we can do on our end, this is something only they can take care of for you.

Cogeco Update

I reached out to them during the weekend and they said there were going to forward the request to the VOD dept. and were going to give me an update whenever available.

As of right now, they are shows that have reappeared during the day, but it’s mostly done at random…some shows will have ( 2/4 ) ep., other will have ( 3/4 ). I’d say there roughly about two thirds of all shows received.

I will give other another update tomorrow and hopefully we’ll be back playing with a full deck !

Yes, I had feared this would be your response, but here is the problem: I already did speak to a supervisor about this. And yes, I absolutely do have the same problem with most the other VOD channels. Actually its worse with most the other channels; they show usually 0-1 episodes at a time instead of 1-3. Its just that I actually get all those other channels over the normal satellite connection, so I don’t care as much about them as The Anime Network, which is only available as VOD content. Other things that happened when I finally reached a supervisor:

  • As you just did, she suggested the THR22-100 must not support VOD, and tried to give me the hard sell to upgrade to the Genie, which I patiently refused. I’d almost have believed she was right, even though their advertising says otherwise if it weren’t for the fact that some episodes were still appearing/downloading and that they used to all appear/download. In fact, it had worked, then broke, then worked again, then broke again over the course of the prior 2 years or so, months apart, breaking finally about 2 weeks before this phone call (April last year now, I think). Additionally, the problem mysteriously does not affect any of the for-pay VOD content. Only the free stuff.
  • I discovered she had no official word as to whether VOD was supposed to work or not on these Tivo units, that was just an assumption she made because the new Genie units were “supposed to have all the new features” and she’d vaguely heard that some old DVR Tivo units did not support VOD. I had one of those old standard-definition “DirecTivo” units too, prior, so I was familiar with them and patiently explained to her that this was a newer HD Tivo DVR unit, and there were actual VOD menus, populated with some episodes, and that they used to all be there.
  • At length, after going over all the normal steps (reset the network connection, reset the whole unit, etc) I convinced her to give me the benefit of the doubt that I had been paying attention carefully and knew there to be actually missing episodes, and that my network itself was not the problem, and my unit was not faulty either.
  • I discovered she’d never seen a Tivo or even pictures of the interface before. She’d never used VOD from DirecTV at all either. In fact, she wasn’t even herself a DirecTV customer. Almost none of their employees (none she knew of anyway) were either, she said. She said DirecTV did not serve the area she lived in, where the call center was located (she said Oklahoma or Georgia I think). She’d been instructing me on all of this from some sort of digital handbook or training manual the call center employees all use, which was based on their generic HD-DVR interface, not the Tivo one.
  • At this point she took my phone number and asked to call me back in half an hour so that she could compare what I was seeing to one of their test units.
  • At length (2 hours later), she “found” a test unit in the building (she said she had to go to another floor she didn’t even know was there) and then I had to walk her through how to find the network setup information and the VOD channel guide. I had to tell her what buttons to press on the front of the unit, since they did not have the remote for it. She’d never seen a picture of the remote either, and was frustrated that the remote for one of the generic HD-DVR units would not work.
  • She revealed to me that they have no access to the schedule for the VOD channels, so when their Tivo also only brought up the same 3 episodes as me, she professed it must be clearly working fine, and those 3 episodes must be the only ones you guys (theanimenetwork.com) had uploaded. She had no way to verify this though, as they had no access to any sort of list of episodes that were supposed to be there for any of the VOD channels, so there was no way for them to actually actually audit it internally. She in fact was previously to this unaware they carried The Anime Network, and it was a revelation to her that there were any VOD-only channels on DirecTV’s network that didn’t correspond to one of their regular cable network channels.
  • After convincing her to compare the list of shows on their test Tivo to the one on one of their “generic” HD-DVR test units, I finally got her to acknowledge there were indeed missing episodes, and now she was convinced that my unit was not faulty but was now doubly certain that the problem must be on your (theanimenetwork.com’s) end. Her statement was very similar to yours; basically that it was utterly out of their hands and the only episodes that are shown are what you guys upload to them, no more, no less.
  • As I had already contacted you guys about this and been directed back to them once before I explained how I was being batted back and forth between two parties perpetually passing the blame to the other, she sympathized and said she’d do some research on it and call me back within a week. After actually seeing the THR22-100 in person, she agreed that it appears it should be supported, as far as she could tell, and maybe the issue had simply gone unnoticed because not many people used these units. When I had originally described it as a DirecTivo she thought I was talking about the old RCA/Phillips 3rd party standard-definition decks from 15 years ago which only had phone jack for internet access. She promised she was going to “get to the bottom of it.” I never heard from her again.

So here we are. You guys say its their fault, they say its your fault. Everyone wants to pass the blame to the Tivo, but some quick googling easily suggests this used to work for other people too. I’m certain its NOT The Anime Network’s fault, I’m merely begging for your assistance in pressuring them to acknowledge and fix the obvious glitch in their VOD server platform. (Apologies for the long post, this one got away from me.)

Anime Network sends the content to DirecTV via a third-party distributor. All of the other DirecTV users on this forum have received their content, leading me to believe that it has been received by DirecTV.

All DirecTV providers receive the same content at the same time and if there are any problems, all users have the same problems.

Since you have a definitely unique problem, the answer lies with DirecTV.

And, since you say that you’re also missing episodes on other VOD channels, this is another indicator that the problem is with them.

I’m extremely sorry that this is happening to you, but the content has been sent out.

When you speak to these people again and they wish to know how much content you should have, here is the DirecTV schedule, (you can change it to a text version by clicking on the “Print” icon just above the calendar).

Wait, so you say there is a third-party distributor involved?? This tells me that it is in fact not conclusively DirecTV’s fault. This third party could easily have accidentally changed the format of the content in a way that breaks compatibility with only the THR22-100, but not the DirecTV receivers running their other software. This could easily explain the situation here actually now that I think of it, as could the possibility of there simply being a fault in their own server setup; for example, if they have separate servers hosting the feeds for the THR22-100’s, due to different formatting requirements for the listings or something like that. If nobody at DirecTV hardly ever tests the Tivos anymore, its easy to see how it could go unaddressed/unnoticed for long stretches of time.

I don’t suppose you could tell me the name of this third-party company and/or lead me towards their website or some other form of contact info so that I could file a tech support request with them instead perhaps?

Anyway, thanks for your reply. If anyone else reads this who is on DirecTV still using the HD Tivo model THR22-100 who actually is getting all the VOD content and could respond and tell me how they got it loading right again, that’d be greatly appreciated too. There are threads you can find through google in various a/v forums and the Tivo official forum itself from when these first came out about 4 years ago reporting many people having the exact same issues as me, and some of them claimed at the time to have managed to get it working again with various “voodoo” tricks but so far I’ve had no luck with any combinations of what I’ve seen posted.

Yes, this is explained more fully in the first post under: III. Missing Updates - Where are my updates?

Yea, I had already read that before my first post, but unless the name of the company in my case, in my region is InDemand, that doesn’t really help me. Its not like DirecTV is gonna admit the name of the company to me themselves; they wouldn’t even admit to me such a third party exists. They purported that you host the feeds.

I can tell you for a fact that Anime Network uses InDemand as the third-party distributor for its VOD.
Only one provider uses something different (and it’s a subscription VOD).

Ok, thank you very much for the clarification. Sorry for all the noise.

Gnarface, there is another way to verify the VOD feeds. I use the DirecTV Android app all the time to validate VOD issues. I have had situations where the app shows episodes that are not showing up on my receiver but never the other way around.

Looks like all missing shows are back ! Well… there’s only one episode left missing but it’s bound to expire this week so I think I can manage  Good thing this problem was resolved this quickly, thanks to everyone involved !

I won’t be able to give a proper update for this week’s update until Monday, let’s hope everything goes OK

No Longer Missing:

Still Missing in Action:

Gourmet Girl 12 (from 1/21/16)

Appearing Incongruously:

None

Notes:

  1. Just some trivia:

a) Two of the titles in the listings have changed, “Kamigami” to “Kamigami No” for #7, and “Super Sonico” to “Soni-Ani” for #4.

b) The episode summary for My Teenage SNAFU #5:

“Hachiman’s sister is asked for advise from her classmates. Apparently she has been acting strange lately, and the Service Club intends to find out why.”

Besides the misspelled (or ungrammatical, take your pick) “advise”, the antecedent of the “she” who “has been acting strange” has been left out–it’s not Hachiman’s sister! What they meant was something like,

“Hachiman’s sister asks the Service Club to help her classmate . Apparently his sister has been acting strange lately, and they’d like the Service Club to find out why.”

Okay, admittedly not even up to the level of “trivia”–but annoying (like me!)

Thanks!
