FVOD USERS NOTE
As mentioned earlier in the thread, Pastel Memories, Ep 2, was pulled from all streaming platforms. The rest of the series for VOD has been re-numbered so that Ep 3 is marked as Ep 2, etc. for a total of 11 episodes. (Except for the On Demand for Spectrum, apparently)

Update on Pre-Updates Preceived/Not Preceived 7/30/20:: Time Warner Cable :: Albany, NY :: Zip Code 12203

Okay…Woke up in the midst of the night and couldn’t sleep, so I turned to the tube and Cutting Edge for some anime and found…

…that Pastel Memories #10 had been relabeled “Pastel Memories 11”. #7, #8 and #9 were still as before. So I checked On Demand, and here we had them all renumbered–“8”, “9”, “10”, “11”–i.e., their original numbering as though we had received the censored #2. Went back to Cutting Edge and verified that “Pastel Memories 11” was still #10: when you went into its description info, it still said it was “10”, and when you started it up, it still played #10. Except…

after I poked at it a bit more, I went back to my In Progress list and discovered I had both “Pastel Memories 10” and “Pastel Memories 11” listed there, and “Pastel Memories !!” had the familiar doubled menu–two sets of Resume/Restart/Back to List, one of which played #10, and the other of which played #11, which we’re not due to receive until tonight

Yep, it’s a now merged episode, the same new-fangled type we first had with that episode of Run with the Wind, where I can only untangle them on Cutting Edge, and I’m still not quite sure how I’m doing it.

I’m not even going to try to guess what happens when we get the actual update at midnight.

The very very very long short version:

Everything arrived on Cutting Edge and On Demand, and everything except Pastel Memories #11 starts up normally. As for Pastel Memories #10 and #11, they’re still merged. But last night’s update did have some effect, because now they’re just an old-fashioned merged episode instead of a new-fangled one, by which I mean that Ye Olde Kludge (for Cutting Edge) and Ye New Kludge (for On Demand, Search, etc.) work just fine. But as usual, every case is slightly different somehow, so there are some small adjustments to make. To save you searching, and because in this case they both need some tweaking since the last time (“It’s always something.”), I’ll append the two kludges yet again at the end of this post–which is what will make this very long.

As for the missing Anime Network intros, this continues to be case for Tsurune #4, Ushio & Tora #39, Chunibyo #7, and Pastel Memories #11, but at least it’s not spreading. One additional wrinkle is that these episodes are also missing the little AN finale, where Mr. Ominous Voice intones “Anime Network,” and they make that screeking sound that sounds like they gouged an old-fashioned phonograph needle across an equally old-fashioned vinyl record. In retrospect, this is obvious and predictable (uh, not the ominous voice and the screek, but that the ending would be missing if the beginning was), but I was slow and didn’t think to test it before now. Sorry.

Now the kludges. First Ye New Kludge for On Demand, etc., because it’s simpler:

Step One: Locate the series via its tile on On Demand, or via Search, etc.

Step Two: Select “11” from the episode list, using the Info button or the Select button (unlike every other time around, the Select button works too for this particular merger. Go figure…);

Step Three: This brings you to the episode’s Info screen, where you have a menu box with two choices, “Watch” and “All Airtimes” ("“All Airtimes? But this is On Demand , Jababbi–any time is airtime.” I know, just roll with it–it actually makes more sense than it sounds…) “Watch” just starts up an episode directly, so instead you…

Step Four: …choose “All Airtimes”. This will give you a list of two identical lines. This time, it’s the top one that plays #11 and the bottom one that plays #10, but you can tell for sure by selecting the line and seeing what the expiration date is–it’s the only thing that differs, 8/20 for #10 and 8/27 for #11.

Step Five: Choose the line for the desired episode and choose “Watch” to start it up;

Step Six: Watch.

Now Ye Olde Kludge for Cutting Edge:

Step One: Start up “Pastel Memories 11” on Cutting Edge. This will start up #10 (the penultimate episode). If that’s the one you wanted to watch, well, watch it. But if you wanted Pastel Memories #11 (the last episode), then go on to

Step Two: Stop the playback of #10 and go back to Cutting Edge ’s In Progress list;

Step Three: In the In Progress list you will find you now have “Pastel Memories 10” listed (after all, that’s the episode that was actually playing) ; select “Pastel Memories 10” via “Info” or "Select" (again, this is a change) . There you’ll find the usual options of “Resume Play” and “Restart” and “Back to List”, and one unusual one: “Other Viewing Options”. This is the one you want, so

Step Four: Select “Other Viewing Options”. This gives you a new list with “Play SD” and “Original Viewing Options.” “Original Viewing Options” just takes you back to the other list, so instead

Step Five: Select “Play SD”; this will start up Pastel Memories #11

Step Six: Watch. “But how do I do that, Jababbi?” “Well, now, you keep your eyes open and pointed at the screen, and direct you attention to…no, wait! You won’t get me! that’s just another path to rump of skunk and madness. Go ask your Uncle Llewellyn. Or your cousin Cadwallader. Or Grandma Hepzibah. Or Mistress Slowhand–she knows everything…Or Doctor Bloody Bronowski. Or the penguin on top of your TV set–preferably before it explodes.”

Okay, back on task…Some things to note:

a) Once you stop #11, you’ll discover that your In Progress list now has a line for “Pastel Memories 11” to go with your “Pastel Memories 10”. Choose either one, and you’ll find the same thing: a choice of five options: “Resume Play”, “Restart”, “Resume Play,” “Restart”, “Back to List”. One “Resume”/“Restart” is for #10 and the other is for #11. (Hey, don’t look at me–I didn’t code it! I’m just taking advantage of a glitch in some leftover code that was apparently designed to handle cases where you had HD and SD versions of the same episode–that’s the “SD” in “Play SD”.) You can tell which set Resumes or Restarts which episode by looking at the episode number and description that comes up when you highlight that line.

b) The merged episodes share the same time track, so if you leave off viewing one episode and the Resume the other, you’ll be at the point corresponding to where you left the other–e.g., halfway through, near the end, etc. This creates the special case…

…c) if you go all the way to end of the episode, past the credits, to where you get the box that asks whether you want to Restart or Exit, and you choose “Exit”, then you’re back at In Progress as usual, but when you choose “Pastel Memories 10” or “Pastel Memories 11”, you’ll get three options: “Play SD”, “Play SD” and “LSD”, no, no, no, not “LSD,” “Back to List”. (Sorry.) One “Play SD” for #10, one “Play SD” for #11, and once again the episode number and description will tell you which is for which.

Basically, it’s simply another in our series of merged episodes.

Most of that post is just a rehash of the kludges, tweaked a bit to account for differences in the way things are working this time 'round (and with some bits of persiflage embedded here and there to hopefully help people stay awake during the slog).

As for the cause of the problem, it looks from here like it’s just another instance of what almost always seems to be the cause: AN let the numbering in what I call (for lack of a better term) the metadata of the episodes go one way on Cutting Edge and another way on On Demand, so that the same number points to two different episodes, and the cable system code figures AN must know what it’s doing and therefore does its best to treat the two different episodes as one and the same. I half-expected this might happen once Pastel Memories #2 got cut and and #3 was relabeled “2”, #4 was relabeled “3”, etc., etc. Anyway, this remains my best guess given my limited access.

The one really weird thing this time around was what I noted in my previous post on Wednesday morning, i.e., that the renumbering of all the episodes on On Demand, and the renumbering of #10 as “11” on Cutting Edge, *and the arrival of #11 and its initial merger with #10, all took place Tuesday night/Wednesday morning, before the regular Wednesday night/Thursday morning update arrived.

Hope that was tolerably clear, and a shorter wade.
