Brain Drain

Just re-reading some previous posts in this thread, and was thinking about this.

Rokka’s dub is on Crunchyroll for free. That makes the Pony Canyon USA release that much worse…

I mean seriously, the BD might have better video quality and have all those extra features, but it’s missing something that a legal streaming site hosts for free

I guess crunchyroll don’t have a lot of dubs

There’s around maybe 100 or so different series that have English Dubs on Crunchyroll.

50 of them were from when they split the partnership with Funimation.

Here’s my post with a link to a list of the English Dubbed shows that Crunchy got as a result.

I think what agitates me most is in the UK they get the Aniplex and Ponycan series licensed here for what we typically pay for Sentai and Funimation . Rokka for example with dub on Blu-ray there is about $80.00 . It’s kind of screwed us in not just overpriced releases ,but getting poorer masters as well and also locked subs . Though to be fair the poor masters were happening at times during DVD when we were not in the same region . Ponycan seems to have kind of given up ,but Aniplex a lot of their buyers are the buyers that would have bought the Japanese release . Most of them look at like I can get two or three series for what I’d have spent importing plus I get English subs . Though a lot of them seem to know Japanese and tend to be a little snobbish about things . I guess I could spend the money on a region free player or mess with the PS3 ,but then sometimes the video format on some of the UK releases cause issues I’ve heard .

With both companies as I said in another thread months back it’s a shame when they get something as I feel more people would buy from Sentai or Funimation . That and they had a chance at a dub for most of the stuff they released sub only which also could have brought in more people to enjoy . It’s after all entertainment which should be able to be enjoyed by as many people as possible.

Some of my pals only just realized that Rokka even had a dub, thanks to Crunchy recommending it to them.

Also, aren’t the only blurays available in the USA for Rokka those crazy oversized ones too? There was a scandal at launch when PonyCanyon was originally offering a more affordable bluray package that as I recall was normal sized, but they canceled it at the last minute.

IMO Netflix doesn’t have a good track record with its “Original Content”, but if it’d like to pick up Rokka for another season…

According to RightStuf at least.

Just read a few pages on their forums about that article. It seemed to upset more than just a few people.

(Admittedly, as a somewhat budget anime fan myself, I wholeheartedly understand their frustration…)

I remember the Rokka debacle. It, along with their PR Rep.'s arrogant attitude, seems to have cost PonyCan US their business. As @Psychopuppet observed they have all but stopped releasing in North America and at least some recent series that would have gone to PonyCan US went to Sentai instead.

Eventually Aniplex / AOA will get fully integrated into whatever evolves from SONY’s games business + Funimation and I expect that their business model will similarly “wilt”.

Just did a quick search on RS, and they only have 3 releases listed from 2018. Sound! Euphonium 2 P1 and P2, and the complete set of Yuki Yuna. Ouch.

Hoping that it goes this way, but they might also keep Aniplex Of America around for the more premium releases of popular series. You never know…

(Admittedly, I did just order my first AOA series recently…)

I bought one AOA set, the first season of Oreimo, when it was released. At $60 it was a fairly good deal with15 episodes + extras. They went rapidly downhill from there with $100+ releases of half seasons that no amount of “Goodies” could compensate for the cost.

For the most part I want most of what they licensed . I think there might be one or two series I’d not have bought from them ,but again the prices for content and presentation put me off . A lot of their stuff uses Paperboard boxes like what CPM used , artcards stock is thin to , and then the books are kind of meh to . What we basically get are what I guess you’d call Japanese budget releases .

I’ve picked up Madoka TV volumes ( should have waited), Read or Die (not the best release for the price ) , Ero Manga Sensei , and Blend-S . May be something else ,but it’s not where I can see it . I kind of wonder if Sony owning them in some part is keeping them around as Honnêamise/Bandai Visual USA had the same pricing scheme ,but did not last .

I want to pick up Gun Gale Online ,but it’s the same price at Rightstuf for 13 episodes as the 24 episode SOA season one set . Yeah so wait it out . If I don’t get it I at least got to watch it .

I’m not what I’d call cheap ,but I look at things as I can get more for my money here .

Edit: Crunchy order came 4 days early .

Definitely want to get Blend-S eventually.

(It took about 3 weeks to save for the set I ordered btw…)

Yuuna however is a different story. Just like with TLR, I will find a way to get enough saved to pre-order it (especially since we don’t know the fate of Xebec…)

Well kinda edit on that. On May 31st, studio Xebec will be no more.

That’s depressing :sleepy:

Both AOA and PonyCan US have series that I wanted to buy, but I don’t have unlimited funds and I won’t overpay. Kind of takes the joy out of the purchase if you know it was overpriced.

That’s pretty much the exact reason I took so long deciding whether or not I wanted to pay $100 for 12 episodes. Eventually I gave up, and yeah I want it enough to spend (a lot) more than a usual purchase. (The one character is too cute IMO)

Really hoping that Yuuna caps out around that mark too when it’s released over here…

Kids who have the biggest yard on the street playing in the road with dark clothes where the cars run 50 mph . Yeah this might not end well .

Well I did something and learned something annoying about having multiple Roku’s on the same account . Got my Mom a Roku for mother’s day . So I took stuff off I know she’d not use only to learn it removes it from all devices . Now I have to sign back in to Crunchy , Funi , and TAN . Old stick and box don’t get enough signal in my room so at least just the living room tv and my room .

So I get a coupon email from Rightstuf to put towards stuff in my cart . I’m like ok I’ll used the code . Only the email says no code .lol

Went to the Orlando MegaCon this morning. Gojira-sama says, “Where’s my 5-Hour energy bottle?”

This was a part of a stall that featured Tamashi Nations Kits, there was a lot of really nice stuff.

The boys made a haul of Art Books, Manga, Anime and Plushies.

I just bought a couple of anime blu-rays.

Fun was had and I’m tired. Next week is vacation so Yippeee!
