Computers & Technology

so glad i still have windows 3.1 up and running as well as DOS 3.0.

fondlescreen technology might work good with 8, but for a REAL computer, it needs REAL software.

It’s a culture thing, there is a lot of pressure to swing for the fence and hit that big home-run. So you get a lot of wild swings, keep in mind that the old home-run king Babe Ruth was also an all-time leader in strike-outs.

Apple’s approach, relatively frequent releases and incremental changes, works well and doesn’t run the risk of misses like Vista was and Windows 8.

Maybe now that Microsoft’s old guard is out there will be some improvement.

When I noticed that those in the “tech community” who were defending Win8 admitted that for Win8 to be usable one had to install 3rd party programs I realized that Win8 was indefensible. Even on my touchscreen ultraportable it isn’t all that usable. I really dislike that the touch-designed Win8 apps are massively dumbed down: I expect that from iOS and Android (GMail app can’t even style text, for shame!) but Windows 8 is a “real” OS on real hardware.

I think Windows has already reached their peek, nothing else they can do but throw glitter and turn the speakers up so loud the squealing distracts everyone from what they’re pumping out.

so a Twilight OS?

Endless saga, yes. :stuck_out_tongue:

I tried to make a Facebook account to follow Sentai because that’s their only way of communicating with the outside world.

Turns out that one must provide a phone number to make a Facebook account nowadays, presumably so they can sell my number to their ad companies. I didn’t realize that Facebook was actually worse than Google+.

…wish I had a cache of “burner phones” like the guys in all the action shows nowadays seem to. B)

I’ve been on FB for quite a few years now, and I’ve not gotten any phone calls from ‘ad’ companies. I only get calls from local companies like lawn care and pest companies like I did before I signed up.

When I had a FB account, it was because the feature/dumb phone I had had it in the menu somewhere, and I assume the browser for the phone allowed it to sign in without me having to do anything. The moment I couldn’t have a remember me function, I basically stopped using it (and 90% of my FB was with that phone as well… so all the whining about how FB change how they looked went over my head. Eventually I deleted the account because I wasn’t using it)

Too often on Facebook when I try to view something (even thee full text of a post) it says that I have to log in to do so. Social media = :frowning:

I love how the Google TV app Crunchyroll uses allows me to use my BD/DVD playback controls on my remote to watch stuff.

So big purchase by Facebook…

Wearing Google Glass automatically transforms one into a “glasshole”. The only way to not be one is to not wear them.

If Google Glass had existed when the “How to be a Dick” episode of Metalocalypse (S2E02 - DethLessons) had been made, William Murderface would be wearing them. If there’s any justice in the world, he will be wearing a parody of them in a future ep of Metalocalypse.

How can a movie be both 21:9 and 1920*1080?

letterbox type thing? 823 pixels of the 1080 is the actual show, and the rest is black bars above and below it.

So if I were to watch a 19201080 21:9 bluray on a 25601080 21:9 display it would be a vertical upscale? :frowning:

Either you’ll get a frame effect, or it would be a vertical upscale. Depends on how its coded.

Fun fact: DVDs did a vertical scaling, in BOTH directions as the format it used was between 4:3 and 16:9. Actually, all the 4:3 TVs were technically doing a vertical down scaling all this time because of that crazy res they used, and DVDs just used it for its format, but they have a flag or something that told the player what the ratio was.

I haven’t heard anything from this since its posting on March 3rd which doesn’t really surprise me. What does surprise me though is that the idea even made it this far and was proposed in the first place.
:dry::huh:

Also in other cell phone related news, this one seems to make sense. Though even with Microsoft owning the rights to the original character, Cortana will never be the same unless she actually speaks with Jen Taylor’s voice. This would be a fun glorified toy to play with just as Siri is and nothing really more than that IMHO.

I’d be more than happy to have to root my phone and come to loggerheads with my phone providers over their questionable service practices if in return the NSA would buzz off.

This doesn’t sound like something that the US Congress should be involved with, but as long as they’re involving themselves in this sort of thing how about they get Verizon to give me a router that isn’t a complete joke. They want me to pay for a gigabit/300Mbit wifi-N router upgrade. The fee that I pay for this bogus, Fast Ethernet 54Mbit wifi-G router should have paid for that upgrade many times over.

So while Congress is ignoring “serious business” to strong-arm the phone companies, could we get them to mete out some ISP justice for me please?
