Film with Frieza to open April 18 in Japan

The staff of the upcoming Dragon Ball Z: Fukkatsu no F (Dragon Ball Z: The F in Fukkatsu, or ‘resurrection’) film announced on Wednesday that pop idol group Momoiro Clover Z (Sailor Moon Crystal, Bodacious Space Pirates) will perform the film’s theme song. Details, including the song’s title, will be announced at a later date.

A producer at Toei Animation said all the members of Momoiro Clover Z are big Dragon Ball fans. The group’s leader Kanako Momota said she hopes the song will bring energy to a lot of people like a “reverse genki dama (spirit bomb).”

Dragon Ball manga creator Akira Toriyama said in an interview in November that the ‘F’ in the film’s title in fact stands for “Frieza,” who will be revived in the film. Toriyama noted that he thought of the title while listening to “F” by rock band Maximum The Hormone, whom he came to know personally through a friend. The song itself features Frieza as a motif, and will be used as a “battle song” during one of the battle scenes in the film. The band originally released the song as its eighth single in July 2008.

Toriyama is personally credited with the original concept, screenplay, and character designs of the new movie “that the entire universe eagerly awaits!!” Dragon Ball Z animation director Tadayoshi Yamamuro will direct the new movie.

The film will star two original characters designed by Toriyama himself: Sorbet (seen above-left) and Tagoma (above-right). The characters are the survivors of the Frieza army and his servants.

The film will premiere in both 2D and 3D in theaters across Japan on April 18. Those who purchase advance tickets will receive an exclusive earphone jack strap of either Goku or Frieza modeled by Toriyama. Regular advance tickets cost 1,400 yen (about US$12), middle and elementary school student tickets cost 800 yen (US$7), and pair tickets cost 2,100 yen (US$17). Special movie ticket cards are on sale now.

Theme song performers play hell’s “angels” in April film featuring Frieza’s return

All the members of the popular idol group Momoiro Clover Z will be guest voice actresses in Dragon Ball Z: Fukkatsu no F (Dragon Ball Z: The F in Fukkatsu, or The Resurrected F), the film opening on April 18. The idols will play “angels” of hell, where the protagonist Son Goku’s enemy Frieza has been imprisoned. The five angels will appear in colors matching the different theme colors of each of the real-life idols.

The group appeared in cosplay with Son Goku’s voice actress Masako Nozawa at a press conference in Tokyo on Tuesday. Two of idols, Kanako Momota and Reni Takagi, even wore a wig or headpiece as Son Goku and Krilin.

Nozawa first met Momoiro Clover Z in 2013 at a cherry blossom viewing gathering held by Prime Minister Shinzō Abe. She and the idols posed for photos during the press conference, and Nozawa remarked on the idols’ roles, “It’s wonderful that you’re angels. I never got to play an angel even once.”

Tuesday also happens to be Setsubun, the Japanese commemoration of the day before the beginning of spring. Costumed mascots of Son Goku and Frieza appeared at the press conference, and everyone threw beans at Frieza, the traditional way of celebrating Setsubun to cast out demons.

The Momoiro Clover Z idols are also performing the film’s theme song. A producer at Toei Animation said all the members of Momoiro Clover Z are big Dragon Ball fans. The group’s leader Kanako Momota said she hopes the song will bring energy to a lot of people like a “reverse genki dama (spirit bomb).”

Mini-manga “Dragon Ball Heroes” takes a break from its V Jump run to make room for a three chapter introduction/adaptation to anime movie

Mini-manga Dragon Ball Heroes by “Toyotarō” has taken a break from its V Jump run to make room for a three chapter introduction/adaptation to April’s Dragon Ball Z: Revival of “F” anime movie. Ahead of the issue’s February 21st release, a bit has made it online…

A summary of the first chapter runs down…

Spoiler warning…

Starts with flashbacks to Freeza getting beaten by Goku and Trunks
With Freeza down, his army is in shambles. So to reorganize, Sorbet (former staff officer of the third stellar region) takes control of the army for the time being. He heads for Earth together with Tagoma, a warrior on par with the likes of Zarbon and Dodoria.
They coerce the Dragon Balls from Pilaf and co., summon Shenlong, and wish to revive Freeza.
Freeza: “I won’t be satisfied until I’ve killed the two Super Saiyans who did this to me.”
Tagoma says something he shouldn’t, and gets killed for it.
Sorbet: “Son Goku has become strong enough to defeat Majin Buu.”
Freeza: “That’s more than I imagined. But I’m a prodigy, so if I bring out all of my dormant power through training, I’ll crush even the Saiyans in the blink of an eye.”
The evilest revenge begins. End chapter one.

Dragon Ball Z: Fukkatsu no F is scheduled to be released in 2D, 3D, IMAX 3D and 4DX in Japan on April 18. Idol group Momoiro Clover Z will perform the theme song, while hardcore punk band Maximum The Hormone’s 2008 song “F” will be featured in a battle scene of the film as well.

In her first post, she mentions that it’s 59 days until the film’s opening—appropriate, because 5-9 is read “Go-ku.”

For the next 59 days, Bulma will be counting down the days until the movie’s premiere with artwork, movie highlights, cast and staff comments, and contributions from other characters, including this post on #58, as translated by Kanzenshuu:

Bulma: But didn’t the Trunks from the future dice Freeza up into tiny bits?!
Goku: They put all the little pieces of his body back together using a whatchamacallit machine, seems like. And on top of that, since he was defeated by me and Trunks, he’s got a huge grudge, and to win against me, he attacked after gaining the strength to progress/evolve further beyond his four transformations.

Girl Band Gacharic Spin to Perform New Dragon Ball Z Kai Ending

New ending theme to feature in anime starting April 5

The official Japanese website for the Dragon Ball Z Kai TV anime series announced on Monday that the all-girl band Gacharic Spin will perform a new ending theme for Dragon Ball Z Kai, titled “Don’t Let Me Down.” The ending theme will air in the show starting April 5.

Oreo Reona, who plays keyboards and provides vocals, commented, “I’ve always found Kame-Sen’nin’s (Master Roshi’s) perverted scenes interesting. I may have started to try and become sexy since that time.”

Hana, who plays the drums and also provides vocals, commented, “I kept doing the kamehameha motion when I was in grade school. I’m excited to be a part of an anime that’s so popular it spans generations, even overseas.”

F Chopper KOGA, who plays the bass, commented, “My brother always opposed my being in a band, but he loved Dragon Ball, so maybe now I can gloat over him. I’ve always wanted to do an anime theme song, but for it to be Dragon Ball is almost a dream!”

TOMO-ZO, who plays the guitar, commented, “I declared myself a space alien starting this year, so I always wanted a fight, but now that we’re doing the ending theme, I’ve lost my will to fight.”

Victor Entertainment will release the single CD for “Don’t Let Me Down” on May 27.

Dragon Ball Z Kai (known as just Dragon Ball Kai in Japan) condenses the 1989-1996 Dragon Ball Z anime series to more closely follow Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball manga. The series features digital high-definition remastering, a re-recorded soundtrack, and select scenes updated with new effects or re-animated footage. The 2009-2011 run of Dragon Ball Z Kai covered from the Saiyan Saga to the Android Cell Saga. The series’ second run began last April, and covers the Majin Buu Saga.

Update: Advance screenings will be held in Japan prior to the April 11 premiere in LA. Attendees will be chosen with a lottery.
