I didn’t get FLCL at all. I didn’t think it was a bad show, just bizarre and often boring. It always seemed like it tried desperately to be funny, but just couldn’t quite manage to get there. I was an adolescent boy at one point, and I couldn’t relate to this show at all. But to be honest, I don’t think I ever saw the last two episodes. I might give it another try, but if 4 out of 6 episodes couldn’t pull me in, I don’t hold out much hope for the last two.
Last episode is really where its takes it’s thing out of its pants and waves it in your face then it smacks you with it and leaves. Before that its a lot of random parodying of things from what I got which leads to confusion as some of the stuff is kind of not common knowledge. It’s not as fun as Excel Saga or Pani Poni Dash though.
After reading that, I’m not sure I want to give it another try…lol
(absolutely must be read in grumpy jii-san’s voice)
I think you really have to be an OVA watcher to like FLCL and its pacing. If you’re into series, you’ll feel FLCL ends right when it starts to get good. If you like movies, you’ll feel that this took way too long to get to the point. It’s really my only complaint though, since the characters are endearing, the animation vivid, and plot full of interesting side tracks to keep one’s attention.
The fusion of animation and music has always been a ready source of exciting material, I think it’s employed well here with the supporting tracks supplied by the popular Japanese pop group “The Pillows”. The dub for this OVA is also palatable, with appropriately matching qualities in the original father’s voice and the english dub version, as well as several other characters. Overall I give this three and a half stars, really only taking away for pacing issues.
Thanks for reading.

LOL!!! Very good Tommy!
Pacing issues…I can understand that issue. But for me it felt well paced. But I totally understand what you mean. I admit to being a fan of OVAs. SOmetimes TV series go on too long and I take forever to finish them, and movies sometimes feel like they need some space between them, so I pause and take a brake in the middle of a movie! i can’t sit there for 2 or 3 hours and wtahc something sometimes. But OVAs I can sometimes get into and since each episode is short, I have my brakes. Still I think I prefur TV series, even if they go on too long sometimes.
I too enjoy music + animation fussion, and that’s why one of my all time favorite movies is Interstella 5555, which totally gets everything down pat, perfectly.
Thus why I don’t do reviews anymore.lol
Who are your sources, and where can I get them? I actually called this on the Funimation blog because of the forum, so how did you know?
Anyway, I may grab this, I think FLCL is a bit overrated, maybe because I get it.
I actually enjoyed FLCL but didn’t buy the initial release years ago because it was too high. Nice to see I’ll be getting this at a reasonable price.
Edit: My mind must be going being as I already posted in this thread lol
Well I have had various sources at some companies for some years now, especially in asian programming sectors. It just comes down to cultivating relationships. When I started my blog it’s definitely expanded my contacts tremendously with insiders and various people whose works and contributions in the industry I have long enjoyed and admired.
As far as FLCL, I had a few very trusted sources hint it to me a bit ago, also I knew that Funi referenced it in one of their panels a bit ago but it’s hard to take some stuff seriously since companies make references big and small all the time - most aren’t clues. But with the various data sources putting two and two together, I was confident they had it (especially since I had a source before that indicated another company had it or was looking into it like 6-7 months ago, and that never materialized… suggested to me that maybe there was some bidding - but this was just speculation on my part). I only hinted it a few days ago as I had another source that indicated movement on it and this week, I was almost positive it would be one of the rescues.
Beyond that, I don’t know much else of their future acquisitions - I know more about what they don’t have. ![]()
Don’t feel bad. I’ve done this multiple times…

A little good news today. Funimation has confirmed they will be using the original dub. So no Funi redub with the same four VA’s we hear in everything else they do.
—And yes, that was a joke, at least mostly…
Yeah I’m glad they kept the original dub for FLCL. It wouldn’t be FLCL without the amazing original cast. Still I’d like to hear what Funi could do on the dub. Just to compare
. If they put TWO dubs (the original and the Funi Factory) on the DVD, now that be cool
. I could watch the show a few dozen more times with a new audio track
. I totally killed Japanese, English, and Commentary track to death on my originals lol
.
Ouran just about destroyed all my faith in Funimation dubs, and I was really looking forward to that one.
But it could be cool to have a second tack to compare it to.
Usually though, I prefer shows to stick with the original dub, unless it was truly awful, or was never completed. Sailor Moon is one show I would have no problems with a redub for, but that is extremely unlikely to ever happen.
Sailor Moon dub was pretty bad. When I was little I new something was off, so that’s a bad sign if a little kid can tell it’s screwy. So I know what yah mean.
Yeah I always want the original dub to be kept, unless it’s like a train wreck or something. I don’t think Ouran was bad man. VERY generic, and I’m not a fan of the dub really, but it’s not bad. Below average/mediocre but you seem to truly hate it with a passion lol. It’s not that bad is it? I surely didn’t like it, but it’s not horrible lol. And I know you didn’t like Caitlin Glass in it, but I thought she totally nailed Haruhi. The only thing I liked in the dub. I HATED Luci Christian, for the first time in my life. She was terrible as the little boy. I mean she sounded like a little girl. She’s done boys before, why does she sound like a girl here? It’s just so not fitting. Funi had to screw up for me to hate something Luci did, as I always love her. But it’s not a train wreck Cody lol…
Caitlin Glass’s casting was the big issue for me. She just didn’t seem to fit the role of Haruhi at all for me. (And don’t give me the line that she sounded like the Japanese VA
) I have to agree about Lucy Christian in this one as well, but I didn’t quite hate her. Like Caitlin, I think it was just a case of bad casting, or perhaps bad direction. This was a really fun show that deserved a really good dub, and Funimation failed to deliver one. It’s rare that a dub annoys me enough to get me to switch audio tracks.
I think my hate is amplified by the fact that this was the one Funi license I was really, really looking forward to. We had this 18+ plus wait for it, and when it finally gets here, the dub is only “Meh”, and the video was of nearly bootleg quality. Over the span of a year and half, they could have done much, much better! I think this is part of the big downside to the way Funi announces licenses.
So, I’m really glad that I watched a friends copy before I had planned on picking up my own. I might pick up the bluray later, as that should improve the video quality, but probably not until it’s on sale.
I said it before a lot of the more recent Funimations dubs lack the love. It’s not just them ,but they are the only ones that were saying everything we pick up must be able to dubbed.
I think a lot of that comes from the move to Box sets, as opposed to singles. With a singles release, the actors and directors had more time to learn and grow with the roles. When you have to pump out 26 episodes in a relatively short time, you loose a lot of that.
Plus, it seems Funimation will let just about anyone direct. They do have some skilled directors there, but it seems like they will just throw anyone into the director’s chair. “Hey, you can act, so why don’t you try directing?”
They also seem to use the same main actors too often. ADV had this issue from time to time, but they do way overboard with it at Funi. It seems every series from them has one of the same three actresses in the lead. I love Lucy Christian, Caitlin Glass, and Colene Clickenbeard, but they don’t need to be the female lead in EVERY SHOW. LOL
I still totaly think Caitlin Glass fit Haruhi. That was my favorite part of the dub. They do seem to throw ANYONE into the directors chair. Now some actors can direct…but just because your an actor, that doesn’t automatically MEAN you can direct lol! I admit that’s a huge problem with Funi.
As for the show being “really good”…uh…well…not really LOL! I thought it was ok, but nothing worth even buying. I was expecting something better, instead it seemed like a shallow “look at the cute guys” show. If it was “look at the cute girls” then maybe I’d bite
. I thought the show was going to parody those types of shows, instead it kinda fell into the trap of BECOMING one. And I didn’t like that. I also didn’t really find it very funny. And with an ehh dub, it was a huge pass. Bones is not a studio I look up to anymore. I don’t hate them, but it’s rare a show from them really clicks with me well.
I fixed that. I meant to type “Fun”…lol It’s not a great show, but it was one I really hoping to enjoy, and I just couldn’t do that with Funimation’s release.
I still love BONES though, but it’s mainly for Rahxpehon and Kurau. Both are among my favorite shows and dubs. Speaking of which, I need to finish the first and rewatch the later SOON!
Ah you didn’t like Ouran either? Haha you rule! It’s an ok show, not a bad show. But not worth watching at least for me.
Bones. Let me brake it down for yah.
Kurau - want to see. The number one show from them I’m dying to see
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 - Want to see
Soul Eater - Want to see
Wolf’s Rain - no interest at all/haven’t seen looks lame
RahXephon - Watching…can’t judge it yet
Eureka Seven - Amazing. A must watch
Jyu Oh Sei - REALLY REALLY good, but has a few problems
Darker than Black - Off to a good start, but they better explain this sh*t, and I hear they don’t
Fullmetal Alchemist Horrible. A sin that has been unleashed upon the world. A terrible show. Makes Angels cry. This show has everything I hate about anime. It’s like they tried to make something I’d hate everything about it, and they succeeded beyond expectations.
