Mitsuru Hattori’s “zombie moe adolescent romantic comedy”

The October issue of Kodansha’s Bessatsu Sh?nen Magazine is announcing on Friday that a television anime adaptation of Mitsuru Hattori’s Sankarea “zombie moe adolescent romantic comedy” manga has been green-lit.

The story revolves around Chiharu Furuya, a high school freshman who is obsessed with zombies. Even his dream is to “kiss a zombie girl.” Through an unexpected set of circumstances, Chiharu gets to know an elegant, pretty girl named Rea Sanka, and together, they try to revive Chiharu’s pet cat Baabu who died in an accident. Chiharu discovers that Rea wants to get away from her many responsibilities by becoming a zombie herself.

Hattori launched the manga in 2009, and the fourth compiled book volume shipped last month.

Somehow I’d missed out on the news that Funimation’s home video release of Sankarea is censored. Funimation didn’t tell us about this, which makes this that much worse.

Funimation failure. Funimation has really been taking a nose-dive as of late. I wonder if that’s something to be read into.

I’m sorely tempted to, if ever it should arrive, send my copy of this show back to Funimation.

I didn’t like it enough to buy it anyway, but if true that’s pretty stupid.

FUNimation Entertainment issued a statement on Friday regarding the edited home video release of Sankarea: Undying Love. Customers who received the DVD and Blu-ray set stated that the home video release contained the censored broadcast version instead of the uncensored home video version.

Funimation stated:
In regard to the release of the Sankarea DVD & Blu-ray content, FUNimation had originally released this set with the materials provided to us.

We will be receiving additional home video masters. Customers who wish to receive the unedited version may do so by emailing sankareareturns@funimation.com along with a copy of your original receipt, and a physical mailing address (no PO Boxes please).

Once the replacement discs are authored we will begin to process your request. Thank You.
The Blu-ray and DVD boxset officially ships in North America on October 1.

Thanks for posting that followup info.

Since mine hasn’t shipped yet I’m hoping that I get the uncensored version right off the bat.

I believe that my bros, who more strategically placed their RS orders to ensure that they got their preorders ASAP, got the censored versions. So they’ll get 2 copies. Lucky.

I just hope that when this is all said and done that I end up liking the show

Funimation issued a recall of its Sankarea: Undying Love Blu-ray/DVD box set on Tuesday. Funimation explained the decision to recall since “the rating on the release will now change from TV14 to TVMA” and added:
If you have purchased this release, and would like a refund, please return product to your retailer. We apologize for the inconvenience, and should you have any questions, please feel free to contact: sankareareturns@funimation.com

We plan to re-release this title with the new materials at a later date once the discs have been authored.
Initially, Funimation planned to issue replacement disks for the series. Customers who received the DVD and Blu-ray set stated that the home video release contained the censored broadcast version instead of the uncensored home video version.

The Blu-ray and DVD boxset would have officially shipped in North America on Tuesday.

Yep. There are now the 2 classes of Sankarea buyers (for those who bought from RS): those who get 2 copies of Sankarea and those who get 0. I’m in the latter camp.

Odds seem high that I’ll end up paying more for the re-release of Sankarea than I would have for the original. I guess rightstuf needs to stick it to the have-nots to get the $ they’re losing on the haves.

Funi delayed streaming this series for weeks, as they did with We Without Wings. Both series have issues. I shoulda known.

I’m leery of all the other Funi preorders I’ve placed :frowning:

Seems that kleckner himself took the interwebs to comment on this issue, almost mollifying my concerns about paying more:

Though I really hope that I don’t have to deal with RS Customer Service to get that coupon price. Talking to those guys is only slightly more productive than talking to a wall.

If it sticks, it looks like Sankarea is scheduled for a Mar 31 2015 release.

Re-release to ship March 31

FUNimation Entertainment began streaming a dubbed trailer for its uncut release of Sankarea: Undying Love on Friday.

Funimation is releasing the uncut version of Sankarea as a BluRay and DVD combo pack on March 31. The re-release will include scenes that were not included when the company initially released the series on home video in 2013. Funimation recalled the release after changing the rating from TV-14 to TV-MA.

Funimation also streamed Sankarea in 2012 as it aired in Japan.

Funimation describes the story:

Zombie-obsessed Furuya is making a potion to reanimate his dead cat when he meets Rea. She’s about as miserable as a girl can get, thanks to her creepy, domineering father. When the pain becomes too much, she tries to commit suicide with a sip of Furuya’s weird elixir. The potion doesn’t kill her – but it does turn her into a zombie after she falls from a cliff.
Now that Rea’s undead and ready to finally live, she hides out with Furuya, who’s always dreamed of having a zombie girlfriend. Their one-of-a-kind relationship comes with some challenges, like the fact that Rea is decomposing. Even worse, her freak-show dad is dangerously determined to get her back under his control. As Furuya fights to keep his ghoulfriend safe, Rea finds the secret to resurrecting her happiness: Live like you’re dying – even if you’re already dead.
