Vandread

spoiler

Well it’s been a while since I saw the show, prior to this viewing and don’t remember the end parts when they get back to Tarak… but where was there any male-male relationship going on in the first episode? I don’t remember any. I mean I don’t recall any kind of father-father parental type system for the males that’s similar to the women’s 2 mother system. Weren’t the males in this series typical males in terms of relationships and the babies just came out of the tube-factory? My memory could be hazy though, so no idea. :stuck_out_tongue:

No one knows? :stuck_out_tongue:

Impatience will be the death of you.

There really wasn’t a male/male parenting in this series, and the bonding wasn’t anything beyond friendship, respect, and obedience. It certainly wasn’t anything like the Mejerian female/female bonding relationships and parental units that the females showed and discussed.

For the Taraak males, babies were factory made, and choosing to make a baby with another, was more out of duty to preserve and maintain a viably appropriate bloodline in the given gene pool. That last part is more of an interpretation on my part though, since it’s not really gone into on any depth level in the series.

LOL yeah, I have dual patience personality - sometimes patient beyond belief, sometimes the total opposite.

Ah, so we see that portion the same way then. Guess my memory isn’t as fuzzy as I thought!

Can’t wait for tonight’s episodes. Along with Kaleido Star… best endings ever imo. Well at least in terms of my memory (perhaps the ending I re-watched the most back in the day. One time I rewatched the final 2 episodes like 3x in a row back to back. ;)). Will be very interesting to see how the ending plays out for me tonight after so many years since.

Yeah, this is one of those rare perfect endings that really leave you feeling good, even with the future they face.

I can’t wait for tonights finale either, though depending on a few things that are going on today, I might be a little late in my watching of it.

What makes it even better is its also one of those rare Gonzo actually good endings.

S2 DVD 4 (episodes 11-13) Season 2 end

Episode 11 is definitely my favorite specific episode.
It’s got so many great one liners in it!

-Handcuffed Barnette lifting up her hands saying “Care to show me how this is any fun?!”
followed by Jura saying “We’ll be ok as long as we have some fun with this.”

-BC saying to the Minister “Don’t you like this look?”
-BC saying “This is how you use a whip!”

And the final two episodes really only require one word… Epic!

Second Stage 11-13 (end)

The Taraak and Megere forces have surrounded the Nirvana. Megere takes the women prisoner. Duero drugs Hibiki and hides him in the Paksis. Taraak “liberates” the men and takes the Nirvana.

The women are put on trial and labeled as “witches”. The judge is deeply offended by the baby book and wants it burned. The women are sentenced to life imprisonment. Dita tries to speak up about the harvest, but is ignored.

On Taraak, BC receives a medal. Funny scene of his superior looking at his breasts and saying “couldn’t you have done something about it?” BC responds that he was awaiting orders and “don’t you like this look”. Love his superior’s reaction!

Duero and Bart are ordered to be “re-educated” because of their ridiculous notions of wanting to live with women.

When the women enter the prison, it seems that the Captain is pretty famous. The prisoners want to join her pirate crew and Dita thinks it’s great.

Hibiki is in the Paksis and it flashes red, meaning that the enemy is coming soon.

So, “re-educating” the men means torturing them until they swear allegiance to Grand Pa. Bart is being whipped while Duero is forced to watch. They refuse to swear allegiance. Duero says that women are wonderful and I like the line he says – “it’s only through women that I found any interest in life at all”. BC interrupts the “re-education” and says he will take over the whipping. Bart confesses that he fell in love with him when he was a woman. Instead of whipping him, BC attacks the guards and releases the men. He throws the medal on the floor and says a funny line – “it’s annoying and I’ve got more than enough bouncing around on my chest already”. Also love Duero’s response – “how interesting”. LOL

Back at the prison, the women are rescued by fellow pirates that stayed behind. One named Rebecca turns out to be the oma to Ezra’s baby. They end up freeing all the other prisoners and taking them on as crew.

Paksis takes control of the ship and breaks away from the men. The women make it back to the Nirvana and board to find Hibiki eating Dita’s ruined meal. He says that even cold, it is pretty good. Dita is pleased and promises to cook for him. Pyoro is all excited to be reunited with Pyoro II and tells Rebecca that he is the father and Pyoro II is his baby.

The men also make it back to the ship and the Captain is pleased. She forgives BC on the condition that he change his voice back to a female’s. BC is still the Commander and she dramatically pulls off the Taraak uniform to reveal her old clothing underneath. Funny!

Great line from the Captain – “there’s a bright and somewhat cruel future ahead for all of you.” And Hibiki saying – “she’s still an old lady with a big mouth.”

Hibiki thanks BC at this point for helping him. And Paiway says she will stop spying on people. They have all grown up a lot at this point.

There is a meeting of the first generation Elders and it turns out that Hibiki’s grandfather is Grand Ma’s brother as well as being the Captain’s uncle. They are all surprised that Hibiki woke up and are told to entrust the future to Hibiki.

Hibiki makes a speech and it is broadcast to everyone, including Taraak and Megere. He says that they must all fight for their future and then he combines with Dita. Love the reactions here – there is a male comment – “has he no shame?” – and the women with Grand Ma cover their eyes. So funny!

A harvest flagship shows up from out of nowhere and they all wonder how it got so close without any warning. It’s Gascogne!! Yay!! Everyone is so happy to see her back from the dead. Me too! She takes over for Barnette and sends her out to fight. Barnette thanks her for staying alive.

Rabat shows up with some support forces. Another anti-earth forces shows up to show friendship to Hibiki. They are from the people that helped Hibiki a while back and were all killed. Then some Taraak and Megere forces join them as well. There’s that “working together” theme again!

The harvest fleet shows up with all the copies of the ships too. The fight is broadcast to everyone. Then the planet destroyer shows up. Hibiki and the girls join to form the Super Vandread, and they manage to destroy most of the enemy ship.

It turns out that the Red Paksis is in the embodiment of a young boy, and is described as a “closed heart that doesn’t accept others”. It attacks the Super Vandread and separates them. Very funny scene of Pyoro trapped under Jura’s chest and her telling him to get away from her, but he so obviously can’t.

The Red Paksis puts up a shield and the dreads are caught inside. Hibiki attacks and ends up on the ship. The boy tells him that Hibiki is incomplete and that it is their destiny to die for earth. Dita contradicts this and Jura and Meia join in and talk about the future. Hibiki says they must conquer their fear and that friends make the difference. Even if they die, they will live on in each other’s hearts. The Red Paksis injures Hibiki and throws them all out.

Dita finally tells Hibiki she loves him and uses his real name for the first time. She ties their hands together and says that they are stronger together. She then asks him to say her name. Hibiki is all flustered and since they are still broadcasting, they are told to get back to the fight. They form the Super Vandread again and promise to never give up and fight to defend the future.

The Blue Paksis realizes that “friends are things to be cherished – we must protect our friends” and attacks the Red Paksis, shielding its friends in the process, and they win!! I love the music right here. It is really wonderful and so dramatically perfect!!

The Captain meets with Grand Ma and Grand Pa. She returns to the Nirvana to tell everyone that the planets will open communications with each other. BC tells them that there will be an experimental study of men and women living together. The men are to return to Taraak as soon as possible to find suitable male candidates for the experiment. Dita is upset by this because Hibiki still hasn’t kept his promise to visit her room.

The men get ready to leave and the women come to see them off. Parfet tells Duero to hurry back to his selfish patients. Paiway interrupts because something has always bugged her. She moves the hair away from Duero’s face and both she and Parfet sigh at his beauty. But we don’t get to see!!

Jura makes some demands and ends up getting weepy. She goes to hug Hibiki, but he ducks and she gets Duero instead. Both Parfet and Paiway are upset by this. They get even more flustered when Duero puts an arm around Jura to move her out of the way and leaves it there. Meia shakes Hibiki’s hand.

Misty pulls Dita forward. Dita has one wish - she’d like Hibiki to say her name. Hibiki says he won’t without a reason and calls her the “biggest fool in the universe”. Dita cries as the men board the transport. As the boarding platform moves away, Hibiki holds out his hand and calls Dita by name. He smiles and says “let’s go”. Dita jumps off the end of the platform and grabs his hand. Aww!!! An extremely satisfying and happy ending!

I also like all the flashbacks during the end credits and how it finally finishes with the words “never end”. I just love this series so much!! It is such a great mix of drama and comedy and also teaches a couple of really good lessons.

I agree with coffee :silly: <— expression on my face at the end

S2 DVD 4 (episodes 11-13) Season 2 end

spoiler

Great set of episodes. I loved the final climactic clash and all the elements borrowed from Super Robot genre with the spirit of humanity conquering the odds, along with the mech elements. A grand ending and all the storylines leading up to it. The end is such a tease, you almost feel it’ll be like the earlier episode where Hibiki and Dita were trapped in the room and just as they were about to confess… something happened. However this time, the tease actually followed through.

Still an amazing series that’s as good as it ever was. I’m amazed how well this series has held up visually after so many years. I still can’t think of a space series that looks this good comparatively for its time frame as this one (especially the final battles).

I was smiling all the way through in this final DVD. It’s a shame the anime boom era is gone. Productions like this simply are not possible nowadays.

This series has definitely aged well.
Even after all these years, it’s still relevant to today’s standards and production values. And has held up quite well, not just in looks, but the overall storytelling.

Agreed. Vandread is just a great overall series with a wonderful ageless story.

Thank you for the group viewing! It was fun to watch and share this with everyone!

Crunchyroll Adds “Vandread” to Anime Catalog

September 08, 2017 8:55pm CDT
More Funimation titles go live on Crunchyroll tonight

After giving this series a rewatch recently, I just realized that it would never fly in today’s political climate.

Main reason: it’s about 2 gay societies discovering the straight life. :grinning:
