I’ve run the preview on my spare HP Laptop for the past 6 months or so. I was able to tame it’s Windows 8 'ishness and make it look enough like Windows 7 for most purposes. It does start and stop much faster than Windows 7 on the same hardware. Overall I’d say it is a reasonable successor to Windows 7 and several steps better than the Windows 8 / 8.1 fubar.

I would recommend waiting until it has been in the field a while, 3 to 6 months, before upgrading. Allow time for the inevitable gotcha’s to be found and a proper Windows 7 skin to be developed.

Yep, I’m not yet comfortable upgrading until I see how issues like baked-in ads and keylogging turn out in the full version.

There's a series of pictures floating around detailing all that users have to disable to take 10 back to 7-like levels of privacy. I find that disconcerting.

Microsoft hasn’t really made a compelling case for why I need Windows 10. Except for DirectX 12, windows 7 has all the “tech of tomorrow” that I need (eg:NVMe, USB 3.1).

Yes, the privacy stuff will have to be addressed. I’m sure that there will be an all-in-one tool created or one of the existing privacy programs will be modified to remove all the phone-home and spyware. Probably both.

I found a very nice review of Windows 10 on re/code. Walt Mossberg does a great job on tech reviews and got to hear some of this on TV but might be worth knowing if you’re on the fence.

So, I installed Windows 10 on my Mom’s Laptop, and when it was done, the default driver wasn’t able to display the correct aspect ratio (Stretched out image) so I did the update driver thing… and black screen.

Alright, I’ll boot into safe mode… F8 doesn’t work… Hmm, search online, aw crap, I need to create some boot media to fix this damn thing! An ISO I did download was both 32 and 64-bit (because I didn’t know if her laptop was 64 bit or not) and it was too big to fit on a single layer DVD-R. So I had to waste a bit of bandwidth to download a new ISO, and I’m picking 64 because hopefully whatever I need to do doesn’t require the boot disc to be the same thing (if the Win7 was in fact 32 bit)

I downloaded the creation tool and burned it on a DVD, now just waiting for the right time to upgrade.

Was thinking about doing a clean install for this one, with all the crap I have on my PC, just need to transfer a few save games back and forth.

When you do it, do the upgrade first so that your product key is updated. Then do a fresh install.

Well the upgrade is done and I’m running Win 10 now turned off the advertising and wi-fi sense. I’ll probably do a clean / refresh install in December, but as of right now everything is running pretty good. Took a little bit of finagling to get close to my 8.1 look back, but I’m happy with it, so far lol

Adblock has been in my Firefox or Seamonkey installs since the beginning, early 2000’s I forget when. Never a popup or ad that I did not approve of.

I finally got Cortana to work with my microphone in Windows 10. Make sure you have your microphone set as your preferred recording device. Voice recognition works pretty good.

Questions I asked:

Who is the worlds most popular virtual Idol singer? (popped a few Hatsune Miku pages)

What is the airspeed of an unladen swallow? (Was bummed she didn’t respond: African? or European?) A few pages plus the Monty Python clip came up.

Does anyone have any experience with the antivirus programs Avast or Avira? I’ve been using AVG for the past few years and I’m thinking of changing to one of the two. I’m more curious if there’s anyone who has used at least two of these for the sake of ccomparison. Thanksh!

Never even heard of Avira, but I think I remember out of the box Avast being really damn annoying in that a lot of stuff had vocal notifications.
