Lol, those were the days. The sounds…
My dad actually had two lines, so that wasn’t ever an issue, unless we both wanted on the internet at once (eventually, I took a spare computer, install 98 SE, and used the internet sharing feature on it)
We had two lines, I took a retired file server ( IBM PS/2 Model 75 ) and set it up with Windows 95 as a dedicated router / firewall with a gaggle of shareware programs. It ran almost continuously for about 3 years from 99 thru 02.
10-Base 2 Ethernet, 10 MegaBit over RG-58 cable , those were the days.

I remember getting the second phone line as well. Internet sharing was a great old feature, but thinking back on having to run cabling/use powerline extenders to facilitate that sharing makes me really appreciate advances in Wifi ![]()
Coaxial cable based ethernet? That’s something I really missed out on. The ability to string a single cable and “tap” into it to install new devices does sound like it could have been kinda cool.
10-Base 2 Ethernet had it’s pluses, since it worked over regular RG-58 cable - think CB Radio - it was easy to get short runs of it in a pinch, but the downside was that it took a LOT of cable to setup a network, in & out to each PC in a chain like Christmas lights. Also like Christmas lights, if one connection broke the entire network could go down. 10-Base T and WiFi were much easier to deal with.
I pulled literally miles of the stuff thru ceilings and walls in offices and schools for about 7 or 8 years in the 1990’s. I tossed the last 100’ or so I had into the recycling when we moved in 2014.
