Perhaps they realized how weak their release catalog has been and was looking to be for 2014. Maybe it is just me but it has been a lean year for Funi. This will be one of the few 2014 Funi releases that I’m actually interested in purchasing.
I was just thinking about what I’ve picked up from Funimation this year.
Robotics; Notes
Date A Live
Red Data Girl
Attack on Titan
High School DxD New
And that’s it, with only Freezing:Vibration the only one I’m still waiting on for a home video release.
Out of the titles they’ve licensed so far this year, only Buddy Complex and Date A Live II are on my get list.
- update: I’ll be getting a version of Cowboy Bebop this year as well, and I’m not counting the GitS: Arise imports even if they are being distributed by Funimation. *
The only Funi titles that I’ve bought this year have been Aquarion Evol Part II and, due to the $19.99 sale, Robotics;Notes. It’s been a year of Funi shows that I either haven’t been interested in or was interested in from the preview/hype but was disappointed with the final product (eg:Devil is a Part Timer).
Except for Freezing:Vibration, I’m drawing a blank for any Funi show “still in the pipeline” that I’m particularly interested in. Part of the problem is the exclusivity of their simulcasts, but I haven’t been really interested by the few that I have sampled.
Thanks to DxD New being moved up, I won’t have to rely on grabbing Bebop to close out the year with at least 3 Funi titles purchased.

My copy finally arrived. Now I can watch it in all of its bluray glory and can finally stop struggling against the temptation to stream the whole thing as it has been legally streaming for ages now.
I checked out the extras and they’re all in Japanese. I thank those who watched this subbed as they helped inspire Funi to bring it over but y’all have my condolences as the subbed version of this is clearly the inferior version.
Astonishingly, I’m not seeing any English extras on these BDs. No commentaries. That’s like 33% of my reasoning for buying this BD out the window. Someone cue up the Bee Gees cause this is a Tragedy.
I have my copy of New as well, Love that it’s the extended episodes with the scenes that were cut from the broadcast release.
I agree that it is disappointing that there are no commentaries for this one. See originally this wasn’t supposed to be out until early next year, but they moved the release up. It should be noted that Funimation has seriously ramped up it’s acquisitions and production schedules. (adding 4 extra licensed titles per quarter in 2014, they averaged from 4-6 in 2013, and 10 per quarter in 2014) so that may be a contributing factor.
I’m glad that they did that, as otherwise 2014 was going to be a really slow year for Funi as far as my purchases went. Though if moving things up cost them the commentary then that’s too steep a cost (hopefully any rushing won’t have a negative effect upon the dub) and I would have preferred New be pushed into next year.
The cynical side of me suspects that the return of “C.T. Anger” had something to do with the lack of commentary. The “Yoko Hikasa voice actor high school” Japanese live-action extras were somewhat interesting but they don’t fill the void IMO. I’m also still not sure why the Japanese cast Yoko Hikasa as Rias…
I was concerned about new direction, but when I checked out ep 1 of the dub a few weeks ago it was still at least as good as Season 1’s was. Of course, ANN lists “C.T. Anger” as being a known Clinkenbeard alias so I could have avoided concern that way, I guess.
Whoa, Chris Sabat sounds completely different in this. Weird.
I also don’t remember Season One being this raunchy. We’ll need Season 3 to be sure, but I’m thinking that we’re getting exponential growth of raunchiness between seasons lol.

Nice Preview and Rosswiese’s in it too!
I’m thinking that the writers should have gone back to the drawing board with “Bend it like Breast-ham’s” (preview of Ep 10)…
I finally got around to finishing DxD New and it was hilarious. It was pretty weak in the plot department, weaker than the first, but that’s not exactly a bad thing and I was too busy ROFL to care
The dub performance of all the male actors, especially Scott “Goldenboy 2.0” Freeman (Issei) was standout and the writing was much in line with what a dub script ought to be. Objectively, I can’t say that it was the best Funi dub of 2014 but it was the most hilarious.

Is that supposed to be key visual; did Crunchy mistype?
I’m torn on this one regarding Broadcast Dubs as I don’t want to wait the 12+ months for the bluray but I don’t want Funi to rush through a dub of a comedy dub.
When was it announced that the Blurays of the last season of DxD would contain several minutes per episode of new content vs the broadcast?

Yes, they did, and my spell check didn’t catch it.
Fixed.
Yeah it’s the Key visual because the new girl added to the harem this season, Rosweisse, is in it
Koneko officially joins the harem this season as well
