Star Trek TV & Film

I have watched 3 episodes of the show and if this criticism was addressed it was done in a manner that was “4deep4me” and, as I look at reviews, pretty much the rest of the vocal viewing audience as well.

I am also confused as to why a bespoke fleet had to be hastily built when the Federation had used its normal ships to resettle refugees in the past. Why not commandeer some of the civilian space freighters? For me, it is the alternate timeline that causes confusion as I have to remind myself that the only <= 2005 Trek canon that applies to STP is what STP itself says applies to it.

This criticism predates the release of the show so it was possible for the writers to have worked in an explanation to address it. I have heard tell of alternative media fleshing out the show but I have not looked into that.

Raffi literally states that in the third episode, very blatantly. You must have missed it, because I’m not sure how much more simply you can say “Over 9 billion are in the range of the supernova.”

Over 9 billion people needed evacuated. Most Federation starships are only capable of carrying a few thousand evacuees at a time. Even if each ships was able to carry 10k refugees, which is a stretch, and made multiple trips to Federation space and back, it would still take tens of thousands of ships to evacuate everyone. That’s something neither the Romulans or the Federation could pull off themselves.

Honestly, the biggest issue is not the evacuation but explaining why the supernova happened so quickly and was there was so little warning. A supernova shouldn’t just happen, unless unnatural forces are at play, say an experiment with trilithium gone wrong.

However, Star Trek sometimes is at its worst when it attempts to scientifically explain away plot inconsistencies, such as the not needed Enterprise arc on how the Klingons lost and then got their ridges back. It added absolutely nothing to the show and was a ridiculous way to explain away better budgets and prosthetic techniques.

Sometimes it’s best to just let sleeping dogs lie, such as the non-explanation for the change in the appearances of the Trill for one, or the fact that Vulcan and Betazoid telepathy always seems to be exactly as strong as each episode plot calls for…lol

Being within range of a supernova does not seem like a threat in the 24th century though as the supernoval can only travel at an infinitesimal fraction of the speed of light whereas starships can travel far faster than light.

As for building an evacuation fleet, why not just put enhanced transporter buffers onto existing ships and just send one ship to store a whole planet’s worth of patterns?

Alternatively, STP could take advantage of the long distance transporter technology used in Star Trek Into Darkness. Since that enabled teleportation directly to the Beta Quadrant from Earth, it could allow Romulans to teleport directly to Mars. This point sticks in my craw a bit as STP’s Romulans are repeatedly shown already having highly advanced transporter technology.

Well you do have to remember that the long distance transportation took place in an alternate time line, and it’s likely it never happened in the Prime timeline.

Your transporter suggestion is possible, but I imagine it would take some very powerful computers with large memory banks, and may not have been the safest route available. One computer failure and millions could be lost.

I do wish that STP had not confusingly recycled the Romulan Supernova idea in this way while being set in the bona fide Prime Timeline (???) because that leads to complications with Old Spock creating his black hole.

From what I’m hearing, the Dominion will be making an appearance in the current Treks at some point. Would it have been so wrong to have made the refugee crisis happen in the Gamma Quadrant? New Trek was going to do a Section 31 show, perhaps they could have tied that into the franchise by having Section 31 have caused the refugee crisis by reintroducing their anti-changeling bioweapon to the collective [Great Link]?

IMO recycling the DS9 plot points would have been better than recycling Trek 2009’s as everyone could’ve gotten what they wanted, more or less, and there’d be no questions about how Spock’s final actions in the Prime timeline affect STP.

…BTW, why can’t the Romulans just slingshot themselves back in time and solve this problem themselves? I know it is “Trek Heresy” to doubt the greatness of Star Trek IV but it did lead to this question always getting raised in response to any Trek calamity.

The rumor is that the Dominion will make an appearance in season four of Discovery. Worth noting that comes from a 4chan post. Some of the 4chan leaks have been true, while others have been intentionally trolling. There may be some credence to it, and there may not be. It will be another year or so before we know.

With all this new content being churned out in the Trek franchise, could Paramount maybe spare a few bucks to complete Deep Space Nine in HD, and put Voyager into HD?

Frankly, I don’t even need the CGI ship scenes to be redone in HD, just run it through one of those AI upscalers.

As I hear it, the TNG blurays didn’t sell well enough (and used IMHO bad new CGI to replace in-camera practical effects), but now that doesn’t matter so much as it’s all about getting content for Paramount+, and the bluray sales would just be icing on the multi-gazillion dollar cake. Probably just wishful thinking on my part.

Still, I’m positive that Paramount+ would get a lot more eyeballs, and active subs, by putting DS9 + VOY HD on than all 4 of these new Trek franchises bring in.
