I had read the discussion on stackpacks when the dub of Clannad was announced but didn’t know what it was about until I got my copy. After trying to get the disks off the stackpack spindle I knew I had to get rid of the case, but I wanted to have a case where the cover from the stackpack would fit.
I did some searching online and found a distributor that looked like it would be easy to work with and not too expensive-most distributors would only sell in case lots of 42 to 100, or wanted twice as much for shipping as for the cases themselves! I found a company, US Plastic Corp., that has 1" wide DVD cases that can hold anywhere from 3 to 8 disks (the number is determined by the number of inserts in the case)and one that is 1 3/8" wide that can hold 10 disks. The four disk version is only $1.04 a case. I bought five at $5.20 and shipping was only $5.46, for a grand total of $10.66 or $2.13 per case. I figure that I’ll need one for Clannad, one for Tears To Tiara, one for Ghost Hound, one for Clannad After Story (if the dub rumors are correct) and one for a future purchase (my personal preference would be Special A.) I ordered the cases on Friday and just got confirmation for shipping that indicates they’ll be here Wednesday.
I know the versa-packs they are decent cases ,but I’m still not a fan of the hubs they use. They are fine for normal on the shelf though. I like M-locks so will be going with them. I forgot all about us plastic. Only issue is they don’t carry the double M-locks so it may be cheaper for me going with http://www.american-digital.com/prodsite/default.asp after I figure out what I need of each case.
I can respect personal preferences. I just looked at my Neon Genesis Complete Platinum Collection Holiday Edition (whew!)and it appears to be the VERSApak so I’m good with my purchase-and it appears to be cheaper (it is before shipping and may still be with shipping added.) I also like that the price quoted by US Plastic is the minimum price and they give discounts for larger quantities.
The best part… we now have given everyone two options for replacing stackpacks!
I’ve seen 5 and 6 disc M-locks that actually use all M-locks ,but I don’t think they are made anymore. Bandai had a case that was two double M-locks together with a cover holder that covered both cases. It was odd but worked well.
Psycho, US Plastic has the M-lock at a very attractive price. You buy in small lots, and for 5 of the dark gray boxes the cost is $6.00 plus $5.50 shipping. Giess I’ll have to try them the next time! You can find them here: http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/item.aspx?itemid=24198
The cases arrived today. They are the same model (minus a few inserts) as the Evangelion Holiday Edition I mentioned a few post ago. It took all of about 2-3 minutes to pop the disks in and change the label insert from the STACKpack to the VERSApack. I have four more cases ready to go now.
It’s the same on the outside but inside you open to find disc inside paper envelopes on top of each other. This is 9 disc I have some of the 4 disc ones to and really it just seems like a waste of paper and plastic. This is what Mill Creek stuff comes in by the way.
Just placed my order. Will be happy to get the Clannad DVD out of that stackpack.
Order was so small most of the charge was S&H.
Which way did you go? I bought five to make the product and S&H virtually the same. I figure I’m going to get Tears to Tiara and Ghost Hound and I want to be ready if they ever decide to dub Clannad After Story and Special A!

I just bought one as a test to see if I would be happy with it.
You know, I’m not sure anyone else here but me and PP actually pay attention to this, but you can get refurbished cases from RightStuf in bulk when they put them up from time to time.
These are what’s availible currently.
M-Lock DVD Cases (Clear) (Box of 30/refurb) - $9.99
Decided to just pass on the double M-locks over at Am digital and get the 12 four disc M-locks , 1 five disc M-lock , 1 six disc M-lock , and 1 8 disc versa-pak from USplastic.
I think that takes care of most Stackpaks I have plus gives me a few left over 4 disc ones for upcoming releases in them.
Hopefully the Moribito cover fits since it’s a slightly more compact Stackpak then what Sentai uses.
Got the 8-disc today and made the transfer already. The 8-disc case is slightly bigger but the cover still looks nice. I think you will be very happy with the new case.
