Beautiful show. I remember one of my friends introduced the show to me. I’m usually skeptical about shows, particularly anime where creators can get away quite easily for producing generic material, but this show just had it. Also loved the opening theme (and art style in the opening). Also, it was only 13 episodes, which is great for someone on a tight budget.
one of my friends was pumping up the show to me as well. just ordered the dvds kinda excited to watch it. could always watch on the online player before the dvds come in.
I bought the complete series when it was available a couple of years ago.
This is like watching a beutiful train wreck in slow motion. It has a story that just when you think it can’t get any worse it does. The anime is extremely detailed and very realist to the point you will be able to turn away even if you want. This is not an anime for the faint of heart.
This show has the BEST opening scene in an anime ever(even better than Kamichu)
I was watching it and Lucy was killing like mad, then that clumsy women showed up and I rolled my eyes in disappointment that it was going to go there, then she was in front of Lucy, and off went her head
Yep they got it. My guess is they could not find a profitable way to release it. It was not part of the original license deal. They licensed the series before it came out on DVD and the OVA was released on DVD in Japan so it was not part of the original deal. It’s more like 10.5 does not add a whole lot ,but it’d been nice to have.
Well, if you read that closely, it never said ADV had licensed it. It said there was a “a very good possibility” that the OVA could be released, as soon as they could figure out a good way to release a 22 minute OVA. It’s possible ADV never finished negotiations for the title, or they couldn’t come to an agreement with the Japanese distributors.
Or there may have even been some ridiculous demands as far as the release went, that prevented it from being released in a profitable manner. Sometimes the Japanese rights holders can be pretty picky on how and even at what price something can be released.
If one of these two weren’t the case, there’s really no reason that ADV couldn’t have released it with one of the Elfen Lied Complete Collections. So obviously, something happened with the title. And more than likely, AeSir, if ADV ever had the OVA, no longer has it.
Also, on more than one occasion since then, both Matt Greenfield and John Ledford stated that they were unable to license the OVA for whatever reason.
I seem to remember something about the having the soundtrack was also mentioned after that as well. Only thing I can think of is they got a deal where they had to release both and decided it was better just not doing it in the end.
Thing you’d find with people higher up in ADV is they would contradict each other at times during CON’s and interviews.lol
My other guesses are they picked up the option for the OVA and the soundtrack ,but something happened to make them decide against getting it. It also could have been they got it cheap enough and ended up deciding releasing it with a set after would cause a big blow up and did not want to risk it since at the time the buyers were already out for blood for anything little thing. As I am sure most well know ADV did not always make the greatest of sense when doing things. I will say from what was going around the live blogs at that time it did sound like they did indeed have it ,but did not know if it was worth the cost of putting it out.
Yeah, it’s hard to say what happened. But regardless, I think it’s a pretty safe bet that we will never get the OVA, unless it’s streamed online at some point.
Too bad about the soundtrack though. It would have been nice to buy that. This show had great music, though the ending always seemed really out of place. Big dramatic death and solemn mood followed by “Baby, I need your love. Baby All I need Is You…” lol Not quite as bad as Eva’s end theme though…
I keep hoping we get the manga someday. I know how it ends, but would love to see it in actual print. Plus, I really want to see how the characters grow and evolve given the longer length.
hold on this is one of those, you never actually see the hero die endings, so there is still a chance that Lucy is alive and is the one at the door. There is just no telling tho.
