Update:

Navarre to Decide on Selling Funimation in 2 Quarters

Rest here:

Hardly surprising, though I have to admit that I was surprised to see how low that number was. Though one has to wonder if any of that is “Hollywood math”…

Yea dude, how can they have strong sales for the same shows every time? Didn’t people get it the first time around?

There still strong, but not as strong as the original releases. I can tell you first hand that the Dragonbox sets and Kai sets aren’t selling as well as the DBZ season sets did.

Funimation recently said at Otakon that they didn’t expect the Dragonboxes to put up Season Set numbers but they are doing well for what they expected. Kai will probably pick up steam later on.

You might be correct. But the chances of them doing as well as the DBZ sets are slim to none. Not only are DVD sales down anyway, there just aren’t as many places to sell them now. I’m not saying DB Kai is a flop by any means. I’m just saying there is virtually no chance of it being as successful as DBZ, especially given that it’s primary airing is on a digital cable network and many people don’t feel the need to buy the Kai sets, because they have already picked up the DBZ or Dragonbox sets.

And no one expected the Dragonbox sets to pull DBZ season set numbers. They were clearly a collector’s item with more limited retail presence.

Dragon Ball Z fans need to realize the milk is drying up slowly. Dragon Ball Z is a retail mainstream title. Fact of the matter is the mainstream fans have their cheap cropped widescreen of the the show they remember and don’t give a crud about any other versions. Most fan’s left are Anime fans and really most anime fans that buy I know are very iffy about to really loathe DBZ.

Seriously the lost between the quarters in really a big one this time around before they lost a good bit between them ,but it did not dip this far. Wonder if the dip is figuring in all of the license they have been getting cause if they don’t have them going right back out then really it’s a lost until they get them out. I know 2.22 and Summer Wars could not have come cheap. Plus they’ve been pulling an ADV and Geneon with licensing a bunch of get it’s then hope they make money. Hopefully next Quarters will be better for them .

Well that probably is true. Funimation really has been over extending themselves these last two years with barely anything to show for it. They better hope Kai puts up the same numbers it did on Nicktoons on the new 4Kids block that is coming in September.

Don’t forget that those strong numbers were only for the premier episodes. The later showings have been doing well for digital cable, but they’re only a fraction of the 3 million viewers the first episode got. I doubt it will pull numbers anywhere close to that on 4Kids. A lot of the target audience has no interest in the block and may actively avoid it due to fear of heavy editing. Not to mention the 4Kids viewing block is during an inconvenient time for many older viewers.

Also DB Kai suffers from the same issue I saw with DBZ if the episodes are split at a episode a week it gets very boring very fast making someone want to switch to other methods. With the age/generation group that 4kids has those methods probably won’t be legal.

Toei did a good job of hack editing so there isn’t anything to censor but blood. I have my own issues with Kai. Personally its nothing more than a hackjob that could have been redone with up to date animation and done from the start instead of starting with Z. Would have been a better way to present Dragonball to a new generation.

Just when I think there is nothing else to add:

According to Toei’s fiscal reports, Dragonball accounts for 75 percent of it’s worldwide income. Now I wonder how much of that comes from the USA being as there are only two other active releases from Dragonball out right now(One in Germany and the others in Spain).

Wwwhattt? You mean FMA:B wasn’t the big hit they claimed it be. Or for that matter, Spice and Wolf, or Strike Witches…no way, I…don’t…(scratches tummy)…believe…it.
From $3 million down to 800k+ is a VERY big drop, especially if it’s all DB related - guess none of their new stuff took off…really?

Well, now we know the reason/funding behing their recent spending spree. I wouldn’t be suprised if Eva 2.22 cost them more than half of that 3 mil.

Hopefully, from all their recent licenses one of them will be a big hit…right?

Kaleido Star
Chrono Crusade
Peacemaker Kurogane
Gantz

Now belong to Funimation. :frowning:
Least they had a good run. Funny how they kept saying their problems were from the Toxic ADV and Geneon pick up’s yet they keep doing it.

Bah!

I wonder if that means we’ll finally get access to the Kaleido Star: Legend of Phoenix ~Layla Hamilton Story~ OVA though.
Kind like they did with the Vandread OVA recaps.

Yeah I think that would be one of the only good things the chance of the OVA though with Funimation it’d probably mean having to double dip on the series to get it.

Dragoon is going to be disappointed more then anyone. Glad he’s not around right now.

Yeah, it’s almost worth it depending on the price though, the OVA is awesome.

Indeed, Dragoon will be heartbroken.
I am as well, since KS is one of my top favs (thanks to Dragoon), I was also hoping neo-ADV would keep KS through all of this.

I better stay quiet.

Actually, Dragoon may not be the one who is disappointed the most… But I know he won’t be happy when he sees this.

But I think both he and I have been suspecting this for a while. It’s still quite sad to see it in print. :frowning:

As I’ve said before, I’m never a fan of “license rescues” when the original company is still around, more or less.

If neo-adv wanted them I’m sure they had the first choice to re-license them.
